Scope of Research

A typical PRC quarterly report provides data on a quarter-by-quarter basis for each product segment from the prior year with forecasts through to the end of the current year.  Annual historical information is provided for the previous two years, with forecasts for the current year and two years into the future.  These forecasts are continuously reviewed and revised where necessary based on current information and economic and industry trends.

Supplementary Research

End-user and buyer research is critical in developing accurate market forecasts.  In 2007, PRC will administer electronic surveys to resellers and potential customers.

  • Reseller Research
    • In-depth survey of resellers segmented by reseller category: Consultant, independent dealer, VARs/SIs, National SIs and Mass/Franchise Retailers.
    • Assessment of their customers and what they expect to spend on IT over the next month.
    • Assessment of what products/technologies will be in demand over the next six months to two years.
    • Analyses of primary and secondary vendors by technology and the resellers’ level of satisfaction with their suppliers and products.
  • End-User Research
    • Periodic surveying of various groups of end-users: Government, Small/Medium Business and Financial Post 500.
    • Assessment of IT budgets and segmentation of spending by products/technologies.
    • Analyses of the applications that will see increased funding in coming years.
    • Analyses of the vendors they are using and their level of satisfaction with the companies and their products.

The most salient findings of PRC’s end-user research are presented in the quarterly reports on an on-going basis.

Methodology

The data presented in this report was derived from the quarterly Monitor Segment Update Program.  The methodology employed for PRC’s Segment Update is similar to that employed for most other PRC vendor tracking programs.

Quarterly questionnaires are prepared and sent by email or fax to all major players in the market.  Typically, PRC asks for unit shipments and revenues by product category as well as other information such as distribution channels and best selling products.

When the cut off date is reached, PRC prepares a data sheet with all vendor shipment estimates for the quarter.  In situations where vendors do not respond, PRC estimates are listed.  These estimates are then sent to vendors for comment.  This is the opportunity for each vendor to scrutinize the figures provided for their own companies as well as for their competitors.

Occasionally, a vendors’ input is the target of scrutiny.  In situations where the same vendors’ data is questioned by a number of different sources, PRC contacts the vendors in question for clarification.  In most cases, the vendor is able to clarify the figures by indicating a range of reasons such as OEM activity, shipments to the U.S., a regional focus or shipments to institutional resellers.  Nevertheless, even after clarification some vendor estimates are still suspect.  In these cases, PRC develops its own estimates based on discussions with channel partners and other vendors, and revises the data provided by the vendor in question.

Additionally, PRC has established relationships with industry partners at both the retail and distribution levels.  These sources are used to verify vendor claims and, where necessary, assist in the development of shipment data for vendors for which vendor data is not available.

Because PRC estimates for some vendors in quarters where we were not able to collect actual information, it is occasionally necessary to update previous quarters when more accurate data is presented.  PRC feels strongly that this report represents the most accurate assessment of the Canadian Monitor Market that is available today.

Timing of Publication

PRC’s research covers the four calendar quarters: January through March, April through June, July through September and October through December.  Data is collected in the month following the end of a quarter.  Hard copy and electronic reports are typically released in the last week of the second month following the end of a quarter.
