Q3-09 Segments

Canadian Copier/MFD Market

It may come as a surprise that the document imaging industry began to show signs of improvement in Q3-09. As a whole, the document imaging sector increased by 10% (Q/Q); however, it decreased by 14% (Y/Y) in Q3, which was better than the previous quarter decreases of 14% (Q/Q) and 1% (Y/Y). Similar decreases are being seen in the single function laser printer segment with a 25% decrease Y/Y for the total printer market. As well, the single function laser printer segment saw a 16% increase on a Q/Q basis. While there were increases in both the business multifunction and SOHO segments on a Q/Q basis and Fax- based MFP’s remained flat to last quarter, it isn’t time to celebrate quite yet. Canadian Digital Signage Market

The Canadian market for digital signage displays has pulled out of its slump. During Q3 2009, shipments were 36% higher than during Q3 2008. This is an excellent result, especially considering how deep the fall had been in the opening quarter of the year.

*Q4 09 Forecasted

Sales on year-over-year basis will likely be down in Q4 2009. Most organizations, in particular, retailers, prefer not to deploy digital signage networks in the last quarter of the year, because it is the peak period for shopping. Owners want all renovations completed by the end of the third quarter, to ensure that their customers have a positive experience in their stores.

Canadian Display Market

The Canadian optical drive market has just passed a major turning point. It has started to grow again. During Q3 2009, all optical drive products (DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, Blu-Ray ROM and Blu-Ray RW) were 6% more than in Q3 2008. The last time that the market achieved year-over-year growth, was more than five years ago, in Q1 2004. After a long difficult period, things are finally looking up. (View the snapshot)
