The Canadian LCD Computer Display Market: Fourth Quarter 2011

The Canadian monitor market is very rapidly converting to LED technology.  These bright, attractive screens make it a pleasure to work in front of one’s computer screen.  Moreover, the new technology comes at virtually no additional cost to the user.    The price of an LED monitor in Q4 2011 was less than the price had been for an LCD monitor of the same width in Q4 2010.

It is not surprising then that the consumers are rushing to LED.  A year from now, less than 5% of the units sold will use conventional LCD technology.

During Q4 2011, Samsung was, for the second consecutive quarter, the leading vendor of monitors in Canada.  The prime reason for Samsung being the overall market leader is that it is dominating the new LED segments and in particular, the wider screen categories.  Acer finished in second place in the overall Canadian monitor market followed by LG in third.

Acer led the LCD subcategory during Q4 2011 by a wide margin.  Acer makes it a point of pride to offer low prices in retail.   In Q4 2011, the response from LCD customers was once again very positive.

Samsung sold more LED Displays than any other manufacturer in the Canadian market during Q4 2011.  As the buyers switch to LED competition will intensify in the LED segments.  One consequence will be lower prices and greater values for the consumer.
