Top
100 Solution Providers in Canada - 2008
|
 |
2008
has proven that Canadian IT Solution Providers continue their steady and stable
growth. The Top 100 Solution Providers achieved revenues of $5.5 Billion, an
increase of 13% over 2007, in which $4.9 Billion was recorded. As a further
indication, the revenue cut off for the 2008 Top 100 was $7.8 Million, versus
just $6.4 Million in 2007.
While
2008 may be remembered for the global economic tsunami, it appears that most
Canadian IT Solution Providers, for the most part, weathered the storm well. On
average, solution providers offered 8 of the 19 ‘solution areas’ we surveyed.
Again this year, IT consulting and networking/infrastructure were the top
solutions; however, data/disaster recovery was replaced with security, as a
leading industry solution. During telephone interviews, the issue of IT
spending freezes, flat or single digit growth, as opposed to double digit
growth and longer timelines to finalize sales, were concerns from all providers
across the country.
Growth
areas, according to the survey, were virtualization, storage and IT consulting and
represent the areas with the greatest amount of opportunity over the next 12
months. When interviewed, most respondents said virtualization will continue
to grow, as the bottom line becomes even more important in 2009. Cloud
computing may be too big of a stretch for many small to mid-sized business, but
will become more important over the next few years for large enterprise. Other
growth areas, such as green solutions, Enterprise resource planning, business
intelligence and customer relationship management will be interesting to watch
over the next year. Alternately, according to the CDN survey, decreases will
affect the hardware sales/installation/deployment, commodity based products and
off-the-shelf software implementation.
From
a customer segment stand-point, most respondents were involved in government,
financial/ insurance/real estate, healthcare/pharmaceutical and
professional/business services. While geographically, the largest year over
year growth came from companies in Manitoba (36%) and Alberta (21%), followed
by Newfoundland & Labrador (17%), Ontario (16%) and B.C. (14%) keeping in
mind that Ontario based companies accounted for 62% of the total revenue
generated.
